Choosing the right commercial roofing option is an important decision, and one that can be confusing if you’re unfamiliar with the terminology. To help you decide on the best material for your roof, our team at Apex Commercial Roofing has put together this guide to some of the more popular options.

  • TPO- Thermoplastic polyolefin, or TPO, is an inexpensive, lightweight commercial roofing material. It is resistant to corrosion and breakdown, discourages mold and mildew, and won’t need to be pressure washed. TPO can be directly fastened to the roof deck or applied with adhesives. In addition, TPO installation uses heat seams rather than adhesives to seal the roof–adjoining panels.
  • EPDM- Another popular commercial roofing material is ethylene propylene diene monomer, also known as EPDM, roofing. EPDM is lightweight and does not require a reinforced roof deck, is relatively simple to install, and can have a lifespan of up to 20 years. It is also durable and will not scratch or scuff easily. On the other hand, EPDM’s dark color can put additional stress on your cooling system due to the extra heat it absorbs, and the material does not make for the most attractive roof.
  • PVC- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a commercial roofing option that consists of two layers of PVC bonded together with a layer of polyester. This material is also treated to be UV-stable and flexible, and like TPO and EPDM, it is very lightweight. PVC is great for flat or low-slope roofs, and is both highly durable and resistant to moisture, fire, wind, and chemical weathering.
